Having succeeded in creating something unique and special with his cult Tuscan winery Tenuta di Trinoro, Andrea Franchetti has launched into the extreme with Passopisciaro. The location is extreme : high up the slopes of the active volcano Mount Etna, at altitudes of 850 to 1000m. The terroir is extreme : black volcanic soils that produce grapes of extraordinary minerality and natural acidity, and a climate with major day-night temperature changes. The vines are also pretty extreme : 60 to 80 year old Nerello Mascalese, a fascinating, exotically perfumed local variety. As at Trinoro, Franchetti insists on awaiting optimal ripeness in these marginal conditions which regularly means harvesting in mid-November. The resulting wines are unconventional, totally individual and utterly delicious.
