Chateau d’Aqueria

With the acquisition of Chateau d’Aqueria, the Guigal family have made a clear commitment to the appellations of Lirac and Tavel with an ambition to reclaim Tavels’ rightful position as the King of Rosés, Rosé of Kings!

Presentation

Established in 1595 by Louis Joseph d’Aqueria, the Château d’Aqueria is one of the most important estates in the southern Rhone with 66 hectares of vines planted within the appellations of Tavel, Lirac and Côtes du Rhône. The magnificent Château is surrounded by the vineyards in one continuous block, split into three very distinct terroirs; red sandy soils which are reserved for Tavel, stony clay soils (similar to Châteauneuf du Pape) reserved for the red Lirac, and stony calcareous soils reserved for the white Lirac.

The property has rarely changed hands during its’ 400 plus years of existence, and had up until recently belonged to the Olivier family who had owned and cherished the estate since 1919.

When the Oliver family decided to sell the property they were determined to find a new owner that was as passionate about Tavel as they were. The Guigal family, who have a long history with the Tavel appellation, was the obvious choice to ensure the legacy of Aqueria would survive and prosper. Tavel was after all one of the four wines that Etienne Guigal first produced when he established Domaine E. Guigal back in 1946!

Today, with the acquisition of Chateau d’Aqueria, the Guigal family have made a clear commitment to the appellations of Lirac and Tavel with an ambition to reclaim Tavels’ rightful position as the King of Rosés, Rosé of Kings!
