M. POMMIER

The Pommier family have been landowners in the Soussac commune of the Entre-deux-Mers since 1863. The current generation, represented by Michel and his dynamic wife Odette, were the first to realise that their land is particularly well-suited to quality wine production, being higher-placed and better drained than most of the surrounding area. They have expanded vineyard holdings to 85 hectares, plus a separate 7 hectare plot in St Emilion, and now make and bottle some of the best wines of the appellation. As well as the lay of the land, the recipe for success here includes low yields of mature and old vines (25 years average for the whites, 45 years for the reds), and intelligent winemaking featuring the best of new techniques (cool pre-fermentation macerations) combined with traditional vat-ageing for complexity and freshness.
