TENUTA DI TRINORO

Some wine producers are so obsessed with quality that one has to question their sanity. One such producer is Andrea Franchetti. His principle estate is Tenuta di Trinoro, which he established in 1992 in a remote corner of Southwestern Tuscany called the Val d'Orcia. The terrain here is reminiscent of St Emilion so he planted Cabernet Franc (cuttings from Vieux Chateau Certan), Cab Sauv, Merlot and a significant proportion of Petit Verdot. Altitudes of 500 to 700m mean that ripening is slow and late, and Franchetti regularly risks waiting until late October or even November to harvest low yields of optimally ripe grapes with great natural balance.
This quality at all costs approach is reflected in the pricing...indeed the top cuvée is currently the single most expensive wine of all Tuscany. However, the "Le Cupole" is virtually as good and at one tenth of the price, it is a genuine bargain.
