CHATEAU POITEVIN

Poitevin...the name may not yet be well-known, but we predict big things for this 35 hectare enclave of dynamism, innovation (revolution, even) hidden in the sleepy fields of the rural Northern Médoc. Already, the wines are starting to make appearances on 3-star Michelin restaurant lists, and the tasting room walls are covered in medal certificates. Young Guillaume Poitevin took his family vineyards out of the local cooperative and started making wine in 1997. His approach to quality is uncompromising - 8 people on the sorting table, for example - and his winemaking is inspired by the 'avant garde' of Burgundy and Rhone...cold pre-fermentation macerations, fermentation in barrel, lees stirring etc. The results are already exciting, yet the wines remain very well-priced.
