BODEGAS Y VINEDOS MAURODOS

The Bodegas Mauro team – Mariano Garcia and his sons Albert and Eduardo – began production of Toro wines in 1997, having purchased vineyards and constructed a bodega near San Roman de Hornija in the heart of the Toro D.O. This is downstream from Ribera del Duero, with an even more extreme climate, getting very hot during the day, but cooling considerably at night. The vineyard area is a wide exposed plateau featuring large stones similar to those found in Chateauneuf, and the heat retention effect of these stones adds to the power of the wines, as does the lack of rainfall. Interestingly, the dry conditions and sandy stony soils give great resistance to phylloxera, and some of the best vineyards are still planted with ungrafted vines. Currently, two wines are made here, both highlighting the power that the Toro appellation is capable of delivering, but at the same time with polish and good natural freshness.
